Personalmanagement in One-Person Libraries: Führungsinstrumentarium eines Bibliothekssolisten

Staff Management in One-Person Libraries: Management Tools of a Solo Librarian

  • Staff management is an essential executive function in every library and institution providing information, irrespective of its size and type: Continuous development and adaptation to the rapid progress in information technologies and increasing customer demands are crucial for survival and require skillful personnel. In one-person libraries staff management is an important topic, too, because contrary to widely held belief a one-person librarian is not the only human resource in a mini library. A multitude of assistants like trainees, student and research assistants, semi-skilled and unsalaried employees support the librarian in his or her struggle for target achievement. The assistants are recruited, trained, motivated and managed. For this purpose, a number of management tools are at the disposal of the one-person librarian in the capacity of manager, comprising techniques and methods of planning, coordination and evaluation. This bachelor thesis is concerned with studying the management situation in one-person libraries, particularly with regard to management tools and their specific characteristics. The author tries to find out the answer if the tools of staff management, well established in large libraries and economic enterprises, can be transferred to mini libraries. In the form of a guideline, the author has developed some proposals for effectively implementing some selected management tools.
