Music, Dinstinction and Subcultures - Sociological analysis of the processes that shape the identities of youth cultures taking the electronic music scene as an example

  • Youth cultures and music scenes are complex frameworks. Nevertheless they play a crucial role for conveying the opinions and values of its insiders and outsiders. The purpose of this study is the analysis of the processes that shape the identities of the individuals that participate in the electronic music scene. Therefor the first part of this work puts the results of different scientific fields in relation: studies about the concept of identity, theories of cognition as well as sociological theories discuss the origins and social functions of our taste (in music). These perspectives are then rendered to the electronic music scene. The findings of five non-standardised interviews helped to extend and to reconsider the existing theories. One of the results is that the fans of electronic music have no specific vision of the social role they are aiming for. This denial leads to a conflicting relationship within the electronic music scene: despite the intended disaffirmation of codes, economic and other individual interests still cause a strive for distinction via codes. Apart from social influences on the perception of electronic music, it becomes apparent that the atmospherical and sonorous stimuli of electronic music encourage an alternative form of self-perception.
