Die Tageszeitung als Online-Medium - aktuelle Entwicklungen und Vertriebsmodelle

The daily newspaper as an online medium - current developments and distribution models

  • For more than ten years by now, daily newspapers have been covering extensively the Internet with digital offers. This bachelor thesis examines how they developed historically into an online medium and explains, which opportunities the new carrier medium offers to publishers. The author focuses on an economic problem, which currently keeps the entire industry in suspense: The business of printed newspapers has been declining for years, at the same time the advertising revenues on the Internet - for many publishers the only source of income in the digital domain - are not sufficient to refinance the costly online journalism. As a result, publishers are forced to generate additional sources of income for their sites. Currently, numerous dailies are experimenting with so-called "paid content"-models. Following the classical dual business model of print journalism, the user is now also supposed to pay for the previously mostly free digital content. In the present paper, different paid content strategies such as online subscription or micropayments are presented and analyzed by means of practical examples with regard to their suitability as a payment model.
